Press Release from Squaw Valley…

Squaw Valley Ski Team Coach Wins Domestic Coach of the Year

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] May 17, 2012
Squaw Valley is proud to announce that the resort’s Head Men’s FIS Coach, Konrad Rickenbach, has been awarded Alpine Domestic Coach of the year by the United States Ski & Snowboard Association (USSA).

In their press release announcing the 2012 award winners, the USSA wrote “Rickenbach has consistently produced some of the most well rounded athletes in the West has had many athletes nominated to the U.S. Ski Team. He uses his coaching to promote positive attributes in all aspects of young racers lives. A former U.S. Ski Team coach now working with the Squaw Valley club program, he is an example of what a good coach is – a mentor, a teacher and a friend.”

Rickenbach has a long and impressive track record of training highly successful ski racers from coaching the U.S. Ski Team to coaching Olympians Phil and Steve Mahre to their respective Gold and Silver medals in the 1984 Winter Olympic Games. Having lived in Squaw Valley on and off since the 1980s, Rickenbach started working with the Squaw Valley Ski Team in 2000 with the 12 and under athletes and became the Team’s Heads Men’s FIS Coach for the 2010 – 2011 season.

“Konrad’s deep appreciation and understanding of the mental aspects of ski racing is a huge part of the reason that so many of our athletes qualified for top level competitions this winter,” said Todd Kelly, Squaw Valley Ski Team’s program director. “Rickenbach is undeniably dedicated to the kids that he coaches, and we are truly fortunately to have him as part of our team.”

Lake Tahoe Ski Foundation Annual Asado

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Yesterday we joined an impressive group of ski racing families, both past, present and coaches at the beautiful Quist estate on the west shore of Lake Tahoe for a wonderful fundraising feast.  The annual asado tantilizes the taste buds with lamb cooked on an open spit, mouth watering sausage and chicken and a variety of sides.  The tables are served by current ski team athletes from the surrounding local resorts who benefit from the proceeds made during the course of the ski season.  The annual event is especially fun for me as I get to socialize with coaches from my ski racing days, former team mates and athletes that  I coached in Mighty Mites, some of whom are now making the first tier of the US Ski Team.  All in all a fun day for a great cause… ski racing.

Lake Tahoe Ski Club Foundation Fundraiser 2010

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Yesterday was a beautiful day for the 17th Annual Gourmet Asado and Fund Raiser for the Lake Tahoe Ski Club Foundation.  This year’s event was held on the Sun Deck at Squaw Valley.  (The usual lake front property was occupied with a family member’s wedding.)  The event came off great with a beautiful sunny afternoon surrounded by some of the area’s most impressive peaks.  The ski community came together including young local athletes from the surroundind ski areas, coaches, former athletes, former Olympians and ski racing enthusiasts in general.  It’s fun to be surrounded by that crowd where you can catch up and celebrate ski racing with so many people you know.  The local race kids were doing the serving, both passing appetizers and serving dinner to the tables.  I coached quite a few of the kids in their Mighty Mite years and it was fun to see them as young adults.  One in particular reminded me of “the day we skiied corkscrew”.  It just reminds me how much a coach can impact an athlete.

Squaw Valley has a long history of coaching and athlete success.  In fact many of the athletes come back to Squaw Valley to give back to the program.  Among the attendess yesterday were 4 of my past coaches from Squaw Valley Ski Team, about 10 to 15 athletes that I coached during my years as a Mighty Might coach and at least 5 friends (or the parent’s of friends) that I raced with in my ski racing days.  Wow, what a ski community all pulling together to support the current athletes.  Squaw Valley… it’s an amazing history to be a part of and a great place to be.
