4th Annual Historical Haunted Tour

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

TANTALIZING TALES WILL BE FEATURED ON HISTORICAL HAUNTED TOUR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18 AND FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2012

Spirits of days gone by will be summoned to haunt the streets of historic Truckee, CA during the adults-only Historical Haunted Tour on Thursday, October 18 and Friday, October 19, 2012. The much loved annual walking tour attracts over 300 attendees, more than sixty volunteers and features tales of yore with a memorable and entertaining twist at Truckee’s historic gems and watering holes. The spooky walking tour begins with a glass of wine, interesting characters and a prize packed raffle at Moody’s. New featured haunts include the downtown Mountain Home Center, MOBO Law, Bespoke, Coffee Bar and Scraps Dog Bakery. And, attendees will return to favorite stops – The Pour House and the Old Jail Museum.

“Unforeseen treats and startling spooks are planned for the 2012 Historical Haunted Tour,” shares Christina Stoever-Young of Sunshine Tahoe, the producer of Truckee’s annual Historical Haunted Tour.

“We’ll be kicking off both evenings at Moody’s Bistro Bar & Beats and dare you to join us as we embark on a journey like no other in downtown Truckee!”

Historians and researchers from the Truckee Donner Historical Society spearhead the tales about Truckee’s Wild West railroad roots. At each stop, attendees’ imagination and senses will be tapped by original performances, visits from the infamous Truckee Regulators and songs by the Barbershop Quartet. It is rumored a libation or two will also be featured when least expected.

Admission is $35 per person. Tickets are on sale at truckeehistorytour.com. The Historical Haunted Tour, a fundraiser for Trails & Vistas and the Truckee Donner Historical Society, has raised more than $15,000 for the two nonprofits. For the most up to date information visit the blog at truckeehistorytour.com and check out photos of prior events here.

Pain McShonkley Classic

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Let the fun begin.  The sun is shining and folks are gathering for all the fun of the Pain McShlonkey Classic weekend.  On the schedule you will find an invite only fundraising Gala event tonight: theme is Moulin Rouge.  Saturday morning kicks off with a Chinese Downhill on snowlerblades putting professionals against amateurs.  Later in the day is the Big Mountain Snowlerblade Comp.  The day finishes off with a few apres ski events and then and 80′s After Party.  The whole weekend is in honor of our lost skier, friend and community member Shane McConkey.  To learn more about the memory of Shane, the foundation created in his honor and this weekend’s events, just visit www.ShaneMcConkey.org.   You can also take a look at Squaw’s website and check out the You Tube video.

The Push: A South Pole Adventure

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

Living in Squaw Valley and the surrounding Tahoe/Truckee area is living a bit of an extreme or exotic lifestyle compared to many around the world.  We enjoy the outdoors and the playground it offers us to recreate and exercise on a daily basis.  The majority of the community is athletic and participate in a variety of outdoor sports which are common here but may be viewed as dangerous or extreme to others and the limits are always being pushed… bigger, better, higher, faster.  I guess what I am trying to say is the average local has a skewed sense of extreme.  On a big powder day in Sqauw Valley you will see hundreds of people jumping off cliffs of all sizes and bombing down the mountains, it’s part of the ski day.  So it takes a community like this to produce the people who push to the next level, beyond what is commonplace in their everyday life, the truly extreme.  And this brings me to The Push: A South Pole Adventure.

8 men are setting out on an adventure to the South Pole.   “On January 17, 2012, for the first time in history, two adaptive athletes will push the limits and themselves to the most inhospitable place on the planet – the South Pole. The chosen date marks the 100-year anniversary when Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova expedition reached the earth’s most remote spot.” (from The Push website)

The group of men on the trip include the two adaptive skiers, a team member for each of them and then four crew members to document the trip.  Of these 8 men, 6 of them are Tahoe/Truckee locals and of those 6, 4 are friends of ours, 3 of which live in Squaw Valley.  So here is this first ever trip with adaptive skiers pushing themselves both physically and emotionally to the South Pole, and the team is comprised of our locals and friends.  What an incredible community we live in.

If you would like to support The Push, they are collecting donations in $10 increments on their website.

Squaw Valley Property Owners with Andy Wirth

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Squaw Valley has a voluntary, yet valuable, Property Owner’s Association. If you own property in Squaw Valley you can be a member. The first event of the new year is a cocktail party with Andy Wirth, Squaw Valley’s CEO, followed by a set menu dinner at Graham’s Restaurant. All paid members of SVPOA were invited to attend the event coming up this weekend. A similar event was held in the fall of 2010 after Andy had taken his role as CEO of Squaw Valley. The event was very well attended as Andy shared his thoughts and goals for Squaw Valley. It seems like SVPOA wanted to make it an annual event as the same sort of event was scheduled fall of 2011. Again a large crowd of members showed up to hear about Squaw Valley’s Renaissance. Unfortunately Andy was double booked and had to head out early after a brief talk instead of staying to mingle with members. So this weekend is the make up event that Andy promised. We are looking forward to an update on the Squaw’s progress on their plans as well as a nice evening with Squaw Valley homeowners.

Pain McShlonkey weekend… a success!

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Many gathered to remember and tribute the well loved incredible skier and person, Shane McConkey, for what sounds like was the 1st Annual Pain McShlonkey Classic.  If you missed it you can still get a sense of the weekend by checking out the details on www.ShaneMcConkey.org.  We enjoyed two nights of fun with the 007 Bond Gala and Fundraiser on Friday followed by a great performance of Tainted Love on Saturday.  Sherry really set the bar high with attention to details, fun, friends and raising of funds.  From what I hear funds raised exceeded what was expected and gets the Foundation off to a good start.

This weekend…League to Save Lake Tahoe Fashion Show

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

I’m so excited for the annual League to Save Lake Tahoe Fashion Show featuring Oscar de la Renta.  This will be our fourth year in attendance and it should be as lovely as ever.  I would imagine the $350 tickets are sold out this late in the game and the organizers are getting the final details ready at the Fritz Estate for Saturday’s fun.  The event seems to be a summer high light in Lake Tahoe, combining the beauty of Lake Tahoe and its mountain lifestyle with the ritz and glitz of city life, resulting in an exquisite lake side fashion show.  I’ll be sure to take a few photos and blog about it next week.

Flying High…A scenic flight from Truckee Airport.

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

My experience of flying from the Truckee Airport was wonderful.

meIt all started in a round about way.  Our son is attending the Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp this week and we are hosting one of the coaches.  Lewis, the coach, is studying aviation in school back home in England.  He noticed the Truckee Airport near the Riverview Park soccer fields and asked if we knew anyone who flies there.  Sure enough we have a family friend who flies in and out of the Truckee Airport regularly.  He happened to be available and kindly offerd us a ride.  And that is what led up to my experience…

ronTo raise the probability of a smooth flight we met at the Truckee Airport at 7:30am yesterday.  As expected it was another beautiful, clear morning in Tahoe.   Our pilot friend has a beautiful aircraft, about 9 years old and seemingly in mint condition, which he rolled out of the hangar when we arrived.  We boarded the 6 passenger plane, buckled up and headed out on the runway.   As we only saw one other plane out in the airport that morning, there was no wait for take off.  We rounded the corner and off we went up into the Truckee skies.

South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe

It was beautiful…over the Martis Valley and on to Lake Tahoe.  It really is a mountain jewel nestled in the mountain sky.  Flying over our local area and it’s treasures just adds to the appreciation of where we live and the beauty of it.  We circled the lake, Lewis was even give the controls for a time, and then we flew over Squaw Valley before heading back to the airport.  The flight was a little over a half an hour.  Gorgeous, peaceful, what a way to start the day.

Thanks to Lewis, our soccer coach, for the reason to fly.  It was my first experience with the Truckee Airport and I have to say it was quite enjoyable.  I can see why the local pilots love it and use it.  Thanks for their efforts in keeping it as quiet as possible for all the locals below.

Martis Camp Concert Series

Friday, July 9th, 2010
Fun for all ages...

Fun for all ages...

An array of summer activities have begun at Martis Camp with a kick off weekend of fun over the 4th of July.  As owners in Martis Camp the opportunity for summer enjoyment is huge with a variety of concerts, clinics, classes, festivals and more.  We enjoyed the opening night of the concert series last Saturday with the band Wonderbread 5 out of San Francisco.  The band donned American flag inspired suits and crazy wigs and played a selection of cover songs.  The dance floor was packed right from the first song until the show was over.  As I was dancing with my husband, our kids, my parents and many friends I couldn’t help but think what a fun way to enjoy a concert.  Most concerts are late in the evening in over 21 locations.  This experience of dancing with the whole family on a beautiful summer evening to great music was priceless.

If you are a member of Martis Camp be sure to check out their calendar of summer events.  If you have  interest in finding out more about Martis Camp and the opportunities for ownership and fun for the family then feel free to contact us.
