Flying High…A scenic flight from Truckee Airport.

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

My experience of flying from the Truckee Airport was wonderful.

meIt all started in a round about way.  Our son is attending the Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp this week and we are hosting one of the coaches.  Lewis, the coach, is studying aviation in school back home in England.  He noticed the Truckee Airport near the Riverview Park soccer fields and asked if we knew anyone who flies there.  Sure enough we have a family friend who flies in and out of the Truckee Airport regularly.  He happened to be available and kindly offerd us a ride.  And that is what led up to my experience…

ronTo raise the probability of a smooth flight we met at the Truckee Airport at 7:30am yesterday.  As expected it was another beautiful, clear morning in Tahoe.   Our pilot friend has a beautiful aircraft, about 9 years old and seemingly in mint condition, which he rolled out of the hangar when we arrived.  We boarded the 6 passenger plane, buckled up and headed out on the runway.   As we only saw one other plane out in the airport that morning, there was no wait for take off.  We rounded the corner and off we went up into the Truckee skies.

South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe

It was beautiful…over the Martis Valley and on to Lake Tahoe.  It really is a mountain jewel nestled in the mountain sky.  Flying over our local area and it’s treasures just adds to the appreciation of where we live and the beauty of it.  We circled the lake, Lewis was even give the controls for a time, and then we flew over Squaw Valley before heading back to the airport.  The flight was a little over a half an hour.  Gorgeous, peaceful, what a way to start the day.

Thanks to Lewis, our soccer coach, for the reason to fly.  It was my first experience with the Truckee Airport and I have to say it was quite enjoyable.  I can see why the local pilots love it and use it.  Thanks for their efforts in keeping it as quiet as possible for all the locals below.

Arts for the Schools

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Yesterday we went to one of the Arts for the Schools fundraising events.  They brought to our little community a nationally acclaimed pianist, Alpin Hong.  He was incredible.  His fingers moved over the piano with incredible speed, precision and finesse.  He played a selection of classical music, all from memory.  Actually, I don’t think his mind could have kept up with his hands and they flew over the piano if he was reading music.  Not only is Alpin Hong an amazing pianist, he also has a great personality.  Between his songs he spoke a bit about the next piece, relating it to his life and often times making the whole audience laugh.  He was a joy for the whole family to appreciate.

Arts for the Schools is an amazing local non profit that brings artist of all sorts to our area where they do special performances at the local schools and then offer community shows in the evenings.  Over the years we have always been pleased with the array of artists/entertainers and the quality of their performances.  We greatly thank Arts for the Schools for their efforts in making our community a richer place.
