Earth Day Celebration in the Village at Squaw Valley

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Tomorrow The Village at Squaw Valley will host the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Celebration from 11am-5pm.  This year marks the 40th Anniversary of The Green Generation.

“On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks and auditoriums to demonstrate on behalf of a healthy, sustainable environment. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. In 1990, Earth Day went global, with 200 million people from 141 nations participating. Earth Day is now widely celebrated around the world as a collective expression of public will to create a sustainable society and inspires changes that bring ongoing benefits to the community.” – Earth Day Network

If this year is anything like last year’s Earth Day celebration at Squaw Valley then it is definitely something to check out.  With sunshine in the forecast I am sure it will be great.  Check out the event schedule and enjoy.

Report from the slopes of Squaw Valley

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

With the 8 or so inches of new fallen snow on the ground the desire to go out and ski was high.  But I had other obligations and luckily feel like I had a fair share of powder runs this season.  Larry did go out and he reports it was just okay.  The visibility was low and the snow was heavy.  Still fun to ski the powder but it was definitely a spring powder day, not a winter one.

We also heard the ski resort is planning to keep KT22 open another week.  Might as well with all this snow.  The weather is forecasted to be nicer this weekend so you should put spring skiing into your weekend plans.

US Professional Ski Patrol Olympics in Squaw Valley

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

Well the 1st annual Ski Patrol Olympics seem to be off to a good start here in Squaw Valley.  The spring skiing conditions couldn’t be better with almost the whole mountain still open.  Smoothies was open today and reportedly in great condition. There is still a ton of snow on the mountain and possibly more on the way.

I was out skiing this morning, such a contrast to last week when I was on a Florida beach.  We decided to check out the Patrol Olympic GS Race down the Slot.  Yes, the Slot, off to the left as you go up Headwall chair.  In all my years at Squaw I have never seen gates set in the Slot.  It was not groomed, too steep for that.  The course was slide slipped in an effort to smooth it out a bit and the gates set right around a rock outcropping near the top.

The course started off the top with big turns and then a huge traverse under Light Towers and over to the Cornice II grommer with a finish on the flats.  We watched about the first 10 competitors out of 50 or so.  The first patroller looked good, but apparently was so excited for the traversed he totally missed a gate.  When he realized, it thru him off and he went head over heels.  Of the first 10 competitors, I think 4 went down.  Not just a hip check but head over heels, pre-released binding, caught edge… it was a bit humorous, luckily they were all okay.  All in all it looked like a ton of fun.  I wonder how Vancouver Olympians Julia Mancuso or Bode Miller would have looked on the course.  They may have made the crazy, bumpy, rutted course look groomed.  Take a look at the course.

1st Quarter Real Estate Update for Squaw Valley

Friday, April 16th, 2010

The real estate market is changing, especially in comparison to 2009.  This year we are seeing sales occur at a more normal pace.  In comparison to the 8 single family homes that sold last year, this year we have seen 8 homes already sell and 3 more have become contingent in the last week.  This puts us at 11 home sales year to date.  Definitely an improvement over last year.  The sales have been primarily in the under $1M market however 2 have been over $1M.  The condo market is following suit is seeing an increased number of sales as well.  The sales in the hotel condos have included a number of short sales and bank sales.  This brought the values down a bit but as these sales occur the low end starts to go up and the means a start toward recovery.  We at Lawrence Realty are happy to see the change and feel the activity will continue through the year.

Powder Skiing at Squaw Valley

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Last week it felt like Spring… the skiing was corny, you didn’t need to wear a jacket when out and about, and I went for my first and second jog of the season.   Some clients of ours from Florida, who own a second home here, were staying at their house and thoroughly enjoying the wonderful spring conditions.  We bumped into them walking one day and they asked, “So do you think it will snow again or is it done for the season?”  We said, “Of course it will snow”.  The day they flew home this wonderful winter storm started, bringing winter ski conditions back.

This morning we went out with the idea of getting fresh runs on either Granite Chief or Headwall which were not opened yesterday.  Since we only ski for a few hours at a time these days, we don’t like to wait in line.  So getting freshies is usually hit and miss for us.  Today we timed things right or had luck on our side.  We started our ski day around 10am and made it down to Granite Chief.  It was packed so decided to do a warm up run on Shirley rather than stand in the line.   While doing so we noticed the Funnel was un-tracked and Emigrant was just starting to spin.  We got first tracks down the Funnel… invigorating.  It was so fun we did the Shirley-Emigrant-Funnel lap again.  Our morning continued to be great as we did a reverse traverse hike from Siberia for a great run down Sun Bowl.  Today was one of those days where that little hike was well worth the effort.  Lucky for us on our way down Headwall opened (it had been closed on mechanical or wind most of the morning).  So we got a second great run on Headwall before the line filled in.  What a great morning.

It has been staying cold and the snow quality is great.  The skiing should continue to be great thru the Easter weekend.  Hope you’re getting out there.
